What is the difference between margin and markup in B2B pricing?

Margin and markup are not interchangeable. Gross margin is profit divided by selling price: a $20 profit on a $100 sale is 20% margin. Markup is profit divided by cost: the same deal has a 25% markup. Pricing at 30% markup when your company targets 30% margin means underdelivering by 7 margin points on every deal. How do I calculate selling price per unit for a B2B deal?

Divide your total landed cost by (1 minus your target margin). Example: landed cost of $49.45 at 30% margin gives a sell price of $70.64. Landed cost must include purchase price, inbound freight, import duties, storage, and amortised one-time costs. Applying markup to the ex-works price alone is the most common source of margin erosion in B2B importing.
